What is ultimate frisbee – a beginner's guide
A team sport that mixes football, basketball, and rugby, swap the ball for a flying disc and the referee for the spirit of the game. The most popular team sport played with a Frisbee.

01 · Spirit of the Game
You are the referee.
Every player is responsible for calling fouls and playing fair, there are no referees, even at the highest competitive level. Sportsmanship is not a side virtue here. It IS the rulebook.

02 · Mixed teams
Men and women, same team.
The Coed (mixed) division is one of Ultimate’s defining features: men and women on the same team, on the field at the same time.
The game
Grass and beach ultimate: two formats, same sport
Played with a disc on a grass or beach field. End zones at each end; the goal is to advance the disc to the opposite end zone using passes only, you can’t run with the disc. Drop, throwaway, or interception → turnover.

Anatomy of a point
How a point of ultimate frisbee is played
01 · Pull
Defense throws
The defending team throws the disc to the attackers from its own end zone. The point begins.
02 · Pass
Air-only advance
The disc only moves through the air. Thrower has 10 seconds to release. No steps with the disc.
03 · Defense
Block or interception
If the disc drops, goes out, or is blocked: turnover. Defense becomes offense instantly.
04 · Score
Catch in the end zone
Complete pass inside the opposing end zone = 1 point. Reset, repeat. Until cap.
Rules
10 basic rules of ultimate frisbee

Field
Rectangular, 100 m long, 18 m end zones at each end.
Start
7 players per side. Defense throws the disc, the «pull».
Scoring
Complete pass in the opposing end zone = 1 point.
The disc
No running with the disc. 10 seconds to throw.
Turnover
Drop, out-of-bounds, interception → defense takes over.
Substitutions
Only between points or for injury.
Contact
Not allowed. No picks, no fouls, no obstruction.
Fouls
Contact = foul. No agreement → reset to start of play.
Refereeing
Each player calls their own fouls. No referees.
Spirit
Sportsmanship and fair play. Compete hard, respect harder.
Brief history
History of ultimate frisbee – from New Jersey to Madrid
The sport was invented and popularized in US high schools and universities in the 1960s. From Maplewood, New Jersey, Ultimate spread across American campuses and reached Europe in the early 1980s.
Spain picked it up in the mid-1990s. Today there are 30+ teams and 800+ players across the country, organized under the Spanish Flying Disc Federation (FEDV).
The international body, the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), runs the World Club Championships and the World Championships for national teams. Ultimate has been an IOC-recognized sport since 2015.
In Madrid, Quijotes+Dulcineas is the oldest club: founded in 1999, 13 national titles, present at every Spanish Championship without interruption since 2001.
The eleventh rule
Spirit
of the
Game.
It’s the rule that holds the other ten together. After every match, the two teams rate each other: communication, respect, knowledge of the rules, fair play. The Spirit Award is earned, not bought. Sometimes it’s worth more than gold.
